The Icarians were a utopian community founded by French immigrants to the U.S., forced to leave France for their political views. Followers of Etienne Cabet's ideas in "Voyage en Icarie," they set up settlements throughout the U.S. Icaria-Speranza was the last utopian community set up near Cloverdale, Calif. from 1881 to 1886.
